They are a group of enthusiastic quilters who assembled about 5 years ago. They associated themselves with ABC QUILTERS, a national non-profit service organization dedicated to providing quilts for love and comfort to babies and young children affected by alcohol, drugs, HIV/AIDS or family abandonment.
WHAT THEY DO:
When ABC QUILTS was disbanded about two years ago, they decided to continue their work of providing their quilts to those in need in the Adams County area.
WHEN THEY MEET:
They meet the first Thursday of each month at 9:30 am at Heritage Assembly of God church in Gettysburg. Some of their members sew on donated sewing machines, others cut material and assemble quilts for finishing. Other members prefer to sew at home and bring their completed quilts to the monthly meetings.
ADDITIONAL MINISTRIES:
In addition to babies and young children, they have expanded their ministry to include area nursing homes and senior citizen centers.
Also, they have shipped about 97 quilts to the Gulf Coast area after Katrina; however, their main emphasis is to remain a local distribution center.
To date, they have completed and distributed over 1,800 quilts.
HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Since they are a non-profit volunteer group, they depend totally on the generosity of individuals, groups, and other charitable organizations. They gratefully accept monetary donations which are used to purchase supplies and especially batting for their quilts. And, donations of Cotton fabric (which they use exclusively in their quilts as they are subject to frequent laundering.)
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Sewing and assembling these quilts is an excellent charitable project for: 1. Middle/High School Home Economics classes 2. Residents at Retirement Villages 3. Attendees at Senior Centers 4. Intergenerational learning Experiences
In addition, they wish to welcome anyone who enjoys quilting and friendship to join them each month to experience the joy of giving to those in need here in Adams County.
